As the days go by, more and more statistics are published to show that the price of being a young driver is increasing and with that, the amount of young people learning to drive is decreasing.

Many say the prices of driving for young people are discouraging them from even learning. Statistics from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency show that the number of 17-25 year olds taking their driving test has fallen by 18% over the past 10 years.

According to InsureLearnerDriver’2017 report, 59% of young people had to sell their personal belongings to cover the costs of learning to drive.

And the soaring prices don’t stop once they’ve passed their test, premiums for young drivers are notoriously known as the most expensive than any other categories of driver, due to being the highest at risk on the roads.

A cost-effective solution to this problem that insurance companies offer to those who have just passed their test is Black Box insurance.

Telematics tracking technology fought to combat this by giving young drivers the chance to pay for personalised premiums which are based on their driving data.

Black Box Insurance Increases Your Safety on the Road

However, there is another massive advantage of using Black Box insurance as a new driver and that is increased safety. Though the device doesn’t have a physical feature in place to stop drivers from being involved in an accident, it does encourage a conscious effort to improve their driving.

A black box is a device, usually fitted in a car that monitors how the car is being driven. The insurer uses this information to assess driving and offers a renewal price which reflects this. Drivers can also usually access their driving performance information and improve how they drive. Here’s a sneak peak of how Safely Insured customers can view their driving data.

Safely Insured has now insured over 4,500 drivers whose vehicles are fitted with Telematics devices. In fact, Safely Insured has their own Young Driver’s Team who are dedicated to offering advice to customers, so that their driving scores improve by being safer drivers.

Jae Pearse, the director of Safely Insured Brokers, told Cambridge News about how they actively try to help new drivers and when they notice that a driver’s performance falls below the expected standard “we call them to discuss their driving style and remind them about how to be safe.”

He went on to state that the first two thousand miles of a young driver’s career are the most dangerous, accounting for 80% of claims. Having a coaching system in place will help guide new drivers when a driving instructor or parent aren’t around to help.

An added feature of the Black Box insurance that Safely Insured provides, is that the devices measures how fast a vehicle is travelling based on the true safe driving speed for that road, which can be up to 20mph slower than the speed limit. This feature is to help reduce the accidents in rural areas which are considered the UK’s most dangerous roads.

Safely Insured and their Young Driver’s team continued effort and support to young drivers means they can potentially drive for less and drive in a safer way. If a customer’s driving score isn’t up to scratch, they won’t just blindly send you a fine or a letter. They will carefully assess your driving data and speak to you on the phone to discuss how to help you improve your score.
