Porsche always has been, and still is to this day, an iconic Marque in the history of cars. Founded back on 25th April in 1931, Porsche has since created an elegant, yet robust, and adrenaline fuelled array of cars to brag about.

They’ve got a range of models from the Porsche Boxster to the 911 Carrera 4S to the incredible 918 Spyder. However, we’re going to focus on the Porsche Boxster S and it’s ability to warm the hearts of many performance car enthusiasts. With designs similar to the 911 and the 918, the 981 Boxster S, carries on the style of it’s predecessors.

Porsche Boxster S

Manufactured from 2012 to present, the newest ‘Porsche Boxster S’ is a great performance car. It’s down to you to decide for what reason, as you can choose from a list of many…

For one, it’s transmission is available in Manual or PDK, with the Manual reaching a top speed of 173 mph. The Manual has been recorded as reaching a speed from 0-99 mph in 11 seconds. The PDK transmission has just beaten that, with a record of 0-99 mph in just 10.9 seconds.

Choose what amount of force your heart desires; the Manual version has a 6 speed gearbox whereas the PDK version has a 7 speed gearbox.

The engine has a capacity of 3.4 litres, is mid placed and has a comfortable 315 bhp behind it.

The Porsche Boxster S is also rear wheel drive (RWD), creating better balance which in effect creates better handling – all the more fun around those corners.

Boxster S vs. 911 Carrera

So, the Boxster S may not be on the same scale of, say, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (with a price tag of over £130,000) but the Boxster S is a truly great performance car, for a third of the price.

Let’s look more closely at the Boxster S, compared in line with another model, the 911 Carrera.

There’s 55 bhp difference between the two cars. The Boxster S has 315 bhp whereas the 911 Carrera has 370 bhp. There’s a difference of 10 mph in terms of top speed as the Boxster S reaches 173 mph whereas the 911 Carrera reaches 183 mph. Finally, there’s only a 0.4 second difference in time between the two, when doing 0-60 mph.

For in excess of £29,000, from the 911 Carrera you get an additional 10 mph on top speed, 55 bhp, and a 0.4 second faster acceleration from 0-60 mph. Obviously, there are other elements which factor into the cost to make the Carrera higher in value, however, on the count of these three things, the Porsche Boxster S really doesn’t fall that far short.

The decision is yours to decide, but the Porsche Boxster S is a classic piece of Porsche’s history and will always be a good choice for a ‘reliable performance’ car.
