As well as modified cars, we also love performance cars, such as this beautiful E64 BMW 650i Sport Convertible. This car (which, by the way, is kept in incredible condition) is owned by Alex in our sales team. He is the man with all the knowledge when it comes to performance cars and he won’t steer you wrong.

Alex decided to upgrade to the faster pace of life this year, with this 4.8 litre, V8 sports convertible which gives out a whopping 367BHP.

Kindly, Alex took the time to talk with us – specifically about the car but also about his passion for performance cars.

When did you first discover your interest in cars?

I’ve always loved cars. So much so, I don’t remember when I first ‘discovered’ it. The fascination’s always been there.

What was your first car?

My first car was a Ford Puma 1.7. I was able to buy a front wheel drive legend for a bargain price. Great little car with a fun chassis and an engine tuned by Yamaha. Just a shame they rusted away like old Fiats! In 2009 the Puma made Evo Magazine’s 100 Greatest Drivers’ Cars, so getting into one as a first car was pretty exciting.

Why did you decide on the car you have now? And how did you end up owning it?

I’d always really admired the looks of the 6 Series and had wanted one for a while. I loved its bold lines, proportions and controversial styling, which was nothing like anything BMW had ever produced before. I waited and waited and finally found this super clean, low mileage example that was still covered under BMW’s warranty, and negotiated a good price. Based on the way the car market has gone, it’s virtually impossible to lose money on it. So combining the fact that it’s practically depreciation proof and covered by BMW in case anything goes wrong, it was as sensible a purchase you’ll ever find for a car in this category. Well, sensible as long as you don’t use it as a daily driver – it’s not the most economical car money can buy! Although 23MPG isn’t that bad considering the engine size, and I’m fortunate in that I can walk to work so it’s not a huge concern. So far it’s been a joy to own: fast, comfortable, lovely engine with a great soundtrack, a refined cruiser, and for a large car, it’s surprisingly easy to manoeuvre around town. There’s very little to dislike about it.

Have you modified the car in any way?

No. The only thing different is a paint protection film that covers the whole front of the car against stone chips and damage. The company I used for this service is called XPEL.

Are you attending any car shows this year?

Sadly I’ll be missing Goodwood this year and I have nothing planned, but I’m certainly keeping an eye out for shows to attend this summer – especially if it involves a bit of travelling.

What insurance group rating is your car? And is it insured through any particular scheme?

50. I have comprehensive Insurance with Safely Insured’s Performance Car Insurance Scheme.
