This Mazda Eunos Roadster belongs to our customer Chris. When it comes to Modified Cars, this one has undergone a huge transformation. The car is a 1992 ‘Mazda Eunos Roadster’ which originally had a 1.6 litre engine, producing around 115bhp. Since then, the car has been so heavily modified that there’s not much left on it now which is stock.

How do you insure a car like this? Chris’ car is insured via our Modified Car Insurance scheme.

The car also has a little history behind it, Chris explained: “The Eunos has had 3 owners (including myself). The original owner purchased it in Japan and imported it into the UK in 2007. While over in Japan, the car competed in various ‘Touge’ events (sprint races up and down the mountains). The car had a large specification back then. In 2013 the car was sold, and by this point it had merely covered 1500 miles in 7 years. The car was stripped back to stock so the aftermarket parts could be sold on.

In the September of 2013 my old MX5 caught fire, so I needed a clean shell to start fresh. That’s when I found this car. When I received the car, it had hardly any interior, mismatch coloured panels, and no roof. After a week of owning the car, my neighbour unfortunately reversed into the rear quarter, but luckily, I had sold the turbo kit from the previous MX5, which meant I was able to pay for a full respray.”

And that ladies and Gentleman, is where the journey to modify Chris’ Eunos began…

Here’s what the car looked like before…

Modified Cars: The passion

“From a young age, I was always interested in cars. My dad took me to some local cruises when I was about 15 years old. I helped at the cruises and that’s when I first realised I loved photography. The passion grew, with influences from: The Fast and Furious films, the Need for Speed computer games, and a craving to grow older and pass my driving test. I started working at a local motor factors in 2009 which only fuelled my passion for cars further (and still does to this day).”

We also put some questions to Chris…

How was the power changed in the car, throughout the modification process?

“The original engine seized after a bad experience with a powder coated rocker cover. The current engine is running at around 90bhp from a UK spec car. With the modifications I’ve added, it’s now producing around 204bhp.”

Do you use any specific garages to perform the work on your car?

“I try and do what I can myself. If I’m unsure or get stuck, my one and only place to take the car is H&S Performance in Norwich. The guys there are amazing, no job is too big or difficult and they’ve really helped me with the build.”

Do you plan to attend any car shows in 2017?

“I’ll be at a few shows this year, such as: Japfest Silverstone, MX5 Spring Rally, The Nationals, Gravity, JAE and MX5 National Rally. Any others that I’m available to attend – I will.”

Has your car been featured in any magazines? Or online forums?

“The car was featured in Banzai Magazine a year or so ago. I’m on a lot of forums too.”

Do you plan to add further modifications to the car?

“I’ve got a few things up my sleeve ;)”

If you could own any car in the world (free of charge) what would it be, and why?

“My dream car is the Nissan Skyline R34 GTR VSpec II in Bayside Blue <3”

Do you have any advice for someone wanting to buy an Eunos?

“Make sure you’re good at cutting hair (I’m joking). On a serious note, keep a look out for rust as that’s the main issue with these cars. Even in stock form they’re fantastic to drive, I’ve even got one as a daily driver.”

Chris would like to give a shout-out to a few companies: H&S Performance, Jass Performance, Garagestar, Rev9, Street Elite Cruiserz, Autodoc, Combustion Punks, and Error Three.

And that’s it for now – we’d like to say a huge thank you to Chris for taking the time to tell us about his passion for the world of cars, and all about his Mazda Eunos Roadster. We wish you lots of luck with the modifications in the future, and we can’t wait to see them!
